Learning English is one of the most important steps towards building a new life in the UK. Our ESOL (English for Speaker of Other Languages) project helps people seeking asylum and refugees develop the language skills they need to communicate with confidence, access essential services and become active members of their communities.

Many of our learners are new to the UK and are navigating unfamiliar systems, while others have had little to no opportunity to learn English before. Some learners are also pre-literate in their first language, requiring specialist support to begin their learning journey.
Our free, accessible programme is tailored to each person’s individual needs. Whether someone is learning their first words in English or building on existing skills, our welcoming classes provide a safe and supportive environment where everyone can learn at their own pace.
How we help…
We offer a range of engaging learning opportunities designed to meet different needs and levels of English including…
-
Dedicated ESOL courses for learners who want structured, regular lessons
-
Open drop-in sessions where anyone can practise English, regardless of their starting level
-
Specialist classes for complete beginners with little or no previous experience
-
Women-only classes, providing a supportive space for women to learn and build confidence
-
A friendly Language Cafe where learners can practise conversational English, meet new people and develop their speaking skills in an informal setting
-
Fun, interactive sessions that encourage learners to use English in real-life situations
As part of our wider services, learners can also access advice, practical support and food in the same safe and familiar environment. This ‘one-stop-shop’ approach removes barriers to learning and ensures people receive the support they need alongside their language education.

Being able to communicate in English opens doors. It helps people access healthcare, education, employment and other essential services, while reducing isolation and increasing confidence.
Since launching in May 2026, the project has supported more than 80 learners, with new people joining every month.
This project is made possible by a dedicated team of volunteer teachers and classroom supporters whose time, skills and encouragement help to create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
